Be Wise About Dry-cleaning
  1. General tips:
    • Do not leave garments on the back seat of your car or where they are exposed to direct sunlight and heat since it could weaken fabric fibers and cause garments to fade.
    • Have matching pieces of a set cleaned together since colors may change slightly during the dry cleaning process. Cleaning pieces together will maintain color consistency.
    • Do not buy white clothes with bright color trimmings since colors tend to bleed and could spoil the garment.
    • Do not mix press only clothes with dirty clothes – keep then separate.

  2. When you stain your garments/clothes:
    • Get garment professionally dry-cleaned as soon as possible after staining occurs.
    • Do not try to pre-treat/clean stained garments yourself before dry-cleaning.
    • Dab off spillage with paper towels to remove as much as possible and then let it dry naturally – do not rub it in.
    • Don’t press stained or soiled clothes.

  3. Before Dry-Cleaning your clothes:
    • Check the cleaning instructions attached to your garment on the fabric care label and make sure your garment is suitable for dry-cleaning. Do not rely on the dry-cleaner to do this.
    • Even though the drycleaners do it, it is a good idea to check pockets of your garments for any valuables or anything that may stain the clothing during the cleaning process.

  4. When handing over garments to the dry-cleaner:
    • Inform the dry cleaner about garments with special cleaning instructions.
    • Point out stains (also light-colored or barely visible spills) to the dry cleaner in advance and let him know what caused it as different stains have different approaches to cleaning.

  5. When receiving garments from the dry-cleaner:
    • Check to make sure that your garments are in fact clean and agreed stains had been removed. If you are not completely satisfied, ask them to clean it again.
      b. If your garments are noticeably damp or smell excessively, then complain to the dry-cleaner and ask him to clean it again.

  6. At home before hanging in your closet:
    • Remove the plastic packaging to prevent the garments from discoloration (this happens over a period of time).
    • Hang garments out for a short while to air if the are a little damp or you detect a smell.

  7. Problems with dry-cleaning: Not necessarily the fault of the dry cleaner. The nature of the dry cleaning process could result in:
    • Colors fade – Garments not properly dyed by the manufacturer. Red is the worst color to bleed out and in some cases need to be washed/dry-cleaned separately.
    • Seems come apart – Could be due to old or rotten thread used by manufacturer.
    • Clothes shrunk – Could be that the manufacturer did not use pre-shrunk material.
    • Waste bands and elastic could stretch out over time due to the heat within the dry-cleaning process, this can be expected.

  8. When searching for good dry cleaner:
    • Ask people you know where they have their clothes dry-cleaned, and whether they're satisfied with the service.
    • Test the dry-cleaner with a couple of items before trusting him with a larger and more delicate batch.
    • Ask your drycleaner if they provide specialized water based washing to clean very dirty/soiled clothes.
    • Make sure that the dry cleaner has quality machines, uses clear (properly distilled dry cleaning fluid) and have qualified and competent staff.

  9. Make friends with your preferred dry cleaner and feel free to ask him questions and discuss your concerns.

  10. Pricing of dry cleaning services: Prices vary substantially and the main cost drivers:
    • Type fabric and type garment since this determines effort and time required to clean the garment.
    • Practices of dry-cleaner - Taking shortcuts such as not frequently cleaning filters, not distilling the dry-cleaning fluid and using a steam tunnel instead of a press, enable dry-cleaners to provide the services at reduced pricing. You get what you pay for! These practices could reduce the life of your precious garments over time.

Professional dry-cleaning enables garments to retain color and remain soft and fresh. Unlike the ordinary washing machines it does not damage the clothing and removes almost all general grime and dirt. It may not remove some specific stains.

Dry cleaning goes through a process of tagging, inspection, pretreatment, actual dry cleaning, final inspection, ironing and folding. Dry-cleaning isn't actually “dry”. Dry cleaning is a process of cleaning the garments without the use of water; instead solvents (good de greasers) are used in within the process. Most dry-cleaning machines today rotate garments within a perforated stainless steel drum. A dry cleaning solvent is pumped through the drum while rotating which absorbs the foreign matter from the garment fibers. The dry-cleaning solvent is recycled after been distilled.
